Beach Getaway

Our attempts at camping mostly failed this spring and we tried and tried to get a camping trip on the books with John and Jennifer way back in February.  Our schedules would not line up until June... Camping in June is no fun in Texas, so off to the beach we went!!!  John and Jennifer had stayed at a condo community last summer that they enjoyed, so we booked a condo for the 9 of us and off we went!

The drive was easy peasy - especially when you give in to the requests for iPad time.  :)  Heavenly silence...

When we arrived, the kids wanted to immediately go see the beach.  So after we unloaded, John and Todd took the 5 kids down to the water to check it out.  Unsurprisingly, they came back soaked.  haha

We went down to the pool after grabbing a quick dinner for the kids and intended to stay there for a long while.  Until a HUGE storm started to roll in.  And FAST.  The staff started pulling people out of the pool and the bright blue skies turned dark as night in seconds.  We grabbed our stuff and left Todd to pick up the food we just ordered and bring it back.  We bolted back to the condo amidst thunder and screaming kids.  Made it back just before torrential downpour took over.   Jennifer and I put a movie on for the kids hoping that would distract them from what was going on outside - which it did - until the power flickered one too many times.  We busted out the flashlights we brought for a night beach walk and just crossed our finger we'd still have power.

Luckily, the storm passed as fast as it arrived and Todd arrived back with dinner for the adults.  We popped the kids in bed quick before the next wave of storm was set to hit in an hour or so.  Adults ate and played games while it rained and rained.  Ended up being a pretty memorable night.

The next day we were up and out early to the beach to play for a few hours.  The kids were so entertained and so happy.  It was awesome to see them creating memories.

The beach in Galveston is definitely not as pretty as Florida or Gulf Shores where we went last year, but for a quick weekend trip - this is amazing.  The kids don't notice or care about the color of the sand or the water - they just want to dig and play in the waves.  Check and check.

We headed back in for lunch and packed up the crew to go to downtown Galveston and explore.  Galveston has done a good job keeping local shops open on the touristy part of the town and souvenir shopping was actually fun since it wasn't just the same things over and over, store after store.

We split the group up about midway through the afternoon so John and Todd could take Lia and Reid to see an old sailboat tour.  Jennifer and I kept Erin, Halle and Parker and headed to an old time candy shop.  I think we had the winning outing!

Making saltwater taffy - YUM

They were allowed one treat and picked cotton candy!!!

We met up with William and Katie who drove in from Houston to spend the evening with us.  We had a yummy (but terribly long due to horrible service) dinner and then headed back to the condo for fun with friends!

The next day we lounged around a bit in the morning and headed out to the pool about mid-morning.

Reid's sleeping digs - tent was a total hit.

Before heading to the pool, Lia and Parker both were having trouble listening and earned five minutes of time sitting out before they could swim.  Lia sat there and just watched the time tick away on my phone.  She was determined to get in ASAP.  haha

The pool was super fun - had a little mini lazy river, a 1ft kiddie area and then a lounging pool.  Great design and now Todd wants a lazy river pool installed around our house... haha

For the afternoon, Katy, Brian and their kiddos, Riley and Audrey drove in from Houston to come to the beach and hang out!  It was a total blast.

Parker and Lia worked for a long time on this "drip castle"

Love this picture

It was a completely perfect way to spend a long weekend and I'm so happy we were able to pull it off!!!  See you next time, beach!!
